Website Update

Posted by creed1701 on Friday, 17 February 2017 at 10:35 AM

If you have been on the website recently, you may have noticed it looks a little different. This is because is has just gone under a major redesign!!

The ultimate goal of the changes made was to generally improve the user experience as well as attempt to bring all of our social media accounts into one central location. To these ends, all SEE events will be located in the “Events” section, where it should now be much easier to access the important information about upcoming events. All pre-update events are now in the “News” section (they were left on the site for legacy reasons), and this section will be used for non-event related news, such as sign-ups announcements, etc. In addition to these changes, there has also been extensive UI changes (as I am sure you noticed ^_^).

There are still some bugs floating around and there will be minor updates throughout the upcoming weeks, but if there are any glaring errors (server crashes, unreadable content, etc) please do not hesitate to let me know. If it is working as it should, I hope you enjoy the changes!!

Weekly Meeting 11

Posted by creed1701 on Monday, 10 October 2016 at 9:30 PM

This week we have not one, but two big events going on at the same time.

First up, we will be hosting a Super Mario Maker tournament and the prize will be a 3 day PAX-AUS ticket!! For those who don't know, SMM is sort of like Super Mario Bros, but other players make the maps. If you don't know what Super Mario Bros is, well while I'm at it I'll also explain Pac-Man and Space Invaders (seriously though, if you don't know just google it).  The winner of the tournament will be whoever can get through a predetermined stage the fastest. Also, in the interest of fairness, the tournament will be held at the back of the room to stop any upcoming contestants from seeing what lies ahead.

Since the projector will be free, this week we will also be showcasing some DDR games!! We finally got our hands on a DDR pad and this week we plan on playing Crypt of the NecroDancer as well as a few others including Stepmania. Also, as usual, we will also have our consoles set up if you prefer those and of course you are welcome to bring your laptops and handhelds as well.

Date: Fri. 14 Oct. 2016
Time: 2pm-5pm
Location: 103 Old Metallurgy

SEE name change?

Posted by Fluto on Sunday, 25 September 2016 at 5:00 PM

~! Attention !~

This message goes out to all members of SEE the old and the new. Over the years as far as 2012 each committee has had this one idea that never pulled through, so today I’d like to ask you the patrons of SEE for your opinion on this matter.

Should the Society for Electronic Entertainment change its name?
This may be shocking for a few and ring true for others, which is why we would like to ask you as you are the foundations of SEE.

The name roots down to finding an acronym that can relate to video games, and at the time EE part of the name came from E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo).

There is a plethora of reasons to change the name such as:

-          SEE doesn’t mention or suggest the topic of Video Games

-          It does not automatically click for first timers that this club is for Video Games

-          The name can be interpreted in different ways that skew from Video Games

-          It can be confused with Electrical Engineering (This has happened)

-          People are sick of SEE puns

With the implementation of a new name there are a multitude of positives that can arise such as an increase in our members since it could be more recognisable.

If this gets approved, there will be a large transitional period as we will need to slowly dissolve from the old name and associate ourselves for the new one. Though this shouldn’t affect you too much.

With this post there is a poll located here, anyone can post their opinion on the matter and suggest names. If you wish to not change the name, then select the SEE option. If we see enough interest, we will plan to hold a general meeting to cast the final vote. I’ll repeat again, this poll is NOT FINAL nor official (according to UMSU), instead it is a survey to receive some insight on your opinions.

Here are some tips on creating a name:

-          Mention Video Games/Games in the name

-          Use a cool Acronym

-          Perhaps Acronyms could relate to Video Games, such as GG/GGWP/GLHF

-          Another aspect that you could mention is eSports

-          Some collective types you can use are Society / Club / Association
